Ambassador Rashad Hussain Joins the Institute for Global Engagement as Distinguished Senior Fellow
The Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) is pleased to announce that Ambassador Rashad Hussain has joined the team as a Distinguished Senior Fellow. Ambassador Hussain brings to IGE a wide range of domestic and international public service experience in diplomacy, law, and national security, further strengthening IGE’s work on a range of critical global affairs issues.
Ambassador Hussain recently concluded his tenure as the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, a role in which he led U.S. efforts to work with governments and civil society to monitor and advance global religious freedom. Ambassador Hussain was confirmed overwhelmingly by the Senate and is respected across the political and faith spectrums for his consistent approach advocating for all faith groups and countering all forms of hate. Prior to this role, he served as Director for Partnerships and Global Engagement at the National Security Council and as Senior Counsel at the Department of Justice’s National Security Division. He has also held key positions in the White House and the State Department, including as US Special Envoy to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, US Special Envoy for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications, and Associate White House Counsel.
Ambassador Hussain has also worked on the House Judiciary Committee and clerked for Judge Damon J. Keith on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center and the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal, and Master’s degrees in Public Administration and Arabic and Islamic Studies from Harvard University.
“We are delighted to welcome Ambassador Hussain to the IGE team,” said IGE President Bob Roberts Jr. “His leadership and expertise in foreign policy and national security, including his work advancing religious freedom and human rights, will greatly enrich our work as we continue to build partnerships that promote peace and understanding worldwide.”
As Distinguished Senior Fellow, Ambassador Hussain will provide strategic insights and thought leadership on global engagement efforts, contribute to research and policy recommendations, and engage with key stakeholders to advance IGE’s mission.
