Classical Origins and Contemporary Contestations of Shari’a: A Model Syllabus
The Islamic resurgence in recent years has given rise to calls for the state to apply a uniform and codified version of shari‘a, or “Islamic law” on all Muslim citizens. This syllabus aims to address questions about the place of the shari‘a in modern politics, and its implications for citizenship, religious tolerance, and the modern profession of Islam. The outline can be used as the basis of a freestanding course, while the separate modules may be integrated as needed into other related classes.
