On December 20, the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan and IGE held a panel discussion in Washington, D.C. on Uzbekistan’s religious freedom progress.

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo removed Uzbekistan from the U.S. State Department’s “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) list due to the improving religious freedom situation in the country. A few months prior, IGE was privileged to lead a civil society delegation to Tashkent to meet with local religious leaders and institutions and sign a MOU with the government to collaborate on advancing religious freedom in the country.

IGE and Uzbekistan Government Sign Agreement to Build Religious Freedom

On September 17, 2018, the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) and the Uzbekistan government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to partner together in efforts to build religious freedom in the country. The groundbreaking MOU marks the first time that Uzbekistan will work with a foreign NGO to address religious freedom.In addition to the MOU signing, IGE led a delegation of American Christian and Muslim leaders to meet with counterparts in Uzbekistan.

IGE Hosts Religious Freedom Seminars in Laos’ Vientiane, Champassak, and Bolikhamxay Provinces

During September and October 2018, IGE and the Laos government’s Ministry of Home Affairs’ Department of Ethnic and Religious Minorities (MOHA) jointly held three religious freedom seminars throughout the country, training a total of 165 religious leaders and government officials.

IGE Holds Religious Freedom Training in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Region

This September, IGE conducted its flagship religious freedom training program in the Mekong Delta region, one of Vietnam’s most religiously diverse regions. This training was the seventh-such religious freedom training that IGE has held in Vietnam and builds upon IGE’s 13 years of engagement in the country.
