Swiss Ban on Minarets Raises Concerns

Print

03 December 2009

A referendum calling for a ban on the construction of minarets in Switzerland passed with over 57% support on 29 November 2009. The vote is being widely criticized by the international community as a violation of human rights, specifically freedom of expression and religion. Although Swiss government officials were dismayed with the result, there is a palpable fear among citizens regarding the growing number of Muslim immigrants. The vote reflects a widespread concern that Islamic fundamentalism will impact Swiss society, but Swiss newspaper Le Temps claims the result was "inspired by fear, fantasy and ignorance."

Please pray for the people of Switzerland and the Swiss government; that this decision will be reconsidered, that fear will be quelled, and that community will be fostered. Pray for comfort for the Muslim community in Switzerland which is facing the difficulties of discrimination.
