Graduate Fellowships
The Institute for Global Engagement's Graduate Fellowship Program equips college graduates for careers in international affairs by providing them with valuable experience in a faith-based non-profit organization that works at the nexus of religion and politics in Washington, D.C., and worldwide. As college graduates begin their careers in international affairs, one of the biggest hurdles is that many organizations require job applicants to have prior experience in the field. Working at IGE provides this experience in a fast paced yet learning environment that strengthens and prepares Fellows for a career in the field of international relations.
Program Specifics
Each Fellow will function as an entry-level staff assistant. Participants will be assigned to a staff member and will work closely with that individual, assisting with daily tasks and research projects. Fellows make an invaluable contribution both to IGE's work and staff, and are welcomed to the organization as colleagues and friends.
All Fellows will receive an orientation at IGE headquarters. There will be periodic gatherings, social hours, and formal meetings to help ensure that each student remains in good standing. The Institute is committed to providing each student with a positive and enriching professional experience. During their time in Washington, IGE faculty and staff will support students in the following ways:
- Creating a nurturing environment.
- Serving as references for students needing academic and personal support.
- Career advising: Fellows receive personal advising regarding their career and academic goals.
- Research and study skills workshops: IGE will offer tips on how to do research, how to read effectively, and many other issues.
The program itself focuses on three main components: spiritual development, administrative skills, and international knowledge.
Spiritual Development
As a team, we seek to come alongside the work that Christ is already doing in the world. In particular, IGE strives to integrate prayer into everything we do as we pray for wisdom and discernment in our friends, our partners, and ourselves.
The IGE staff sets aside time each morning for prayer. The entire staff takes turns facilitating devotions. Facilitators develop a theme in advance and announce it on the Friday of the previous week, thus allowing other staff to prepare their hearts and minds to engage the coming week's theme. Devotions focus on the nexus of biblical truth and global issues. Possible topics for devotions include, but certainly are not limited to:
- A specific Biblical book, person, or issue;
- A theological concept;
- A particular country or region;
- A particular religious or ethnic community;
- Persecuted people in a particular country or region; or
- Music, art, or poetry with spiritual significance.
Administrative Skills
Everybody at IGE assists with administrative tasks-we are a "think-and-do tank," and our "doing" requires excellence in the execution. All Fellows will know IGE's administrative procedures, policies, and information technology systems. Administration is not the flashiest part of leadership, but we know from experience that acute attention to detail is the difference between good and great. While at IGE, Fellows will be trained in and become comfortable with:
- Entering and maintaining contact data;
- Using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook);
- Working on IGE's website, including uploading pictures, daily news updates, events, articles, and press releases;
- Photography at events and picture editing;
- Assisting with designing and executing office mailings;
- Assisting with internal and external office events;
- Answering the phone and delivering messages to staff members; and
- Preparing informational folders for office guests and conferences.
International Knowledge
Fellows are mentored and trained in international affairs through a capable staff that encourages hands-on experience. During the program, Fellows gain new knowledge and insights about the world. A priority should be made throughout the program to stay informed, watch the news, and read reliable news sources. Researching and summarizing news on our country programs and religious freedom concerns allows Fellows to stay current on IGE's overseas initiatives while providing consistent updates to our website.
Requirements
All Fellows must possess excellent research and writing skills, independent work ability, a personal and professional standard of excellence, a deep Christian faith commitment, and a desire to live out that faith in the context of the broader global community. Candidates must enjoy strategic thinking, attention-to-detail, and multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment. A nine-month commitment is required, and participants will be paid a monthly stipend of $1,750.
